Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

What is Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)?
In its most simplistic terms, EFT is a combination of ancient Chinese acupressure and psychology. It was founded by Gary Craig in 1995. There are many spin offs but there is only one original, and pure EFT.

EFT involves tapping, using your fingers, on specific meridian points over the body, whilst focusing on any adult issue you wish to address. EFT accesses the amygdala part of the brain that is responsible for triggering the body’s natural reaction to fear, so the fight or flight response. It is this that makes EFT so powerful in changing learnt behaviours or reactions. The really good thing about EFT is you don’t need to go into all the details of the issue you wish to deal with, as you can imagine it in a way that suits you, one you can focus on. Some people imagine the issue they are dealing with as a colour or shape, sometimes both, this then represents to them, all that the issue holds for them emotionally, and physically, so all the thoughts and feelings surrounding that issue.

By tapping on the various meridian points over your body, and focusing completely on the emotional issue you wish to address, be it a fear, phobia, traumatic event, bad memory or unresolved problem, it accesses the body’s energy, restoring it to its natural state. The impact of the issue you were then focusing on, lifts.

Tapping can quickly alleviate issues such as depression, panic, fears, phobias, traumas, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), physical pain and illnesses. It has been, and still is, used by the armed forces in treating former serving soldiers, for issues such as loss of limbs, PTSD and depression. It is also used by the police force for officers who have to attend traumatic incidents such as fatalities, suicides, terrorist attacks etc. It has been used for firearm officers for some time now.
