What is Psychotherapeutic Counselling?

Psychotherapeutic Counselling deals with the person as a whole and can help you to explore and address many areas of your life that may be causing you anxiety, stress or unhappiness. From the moment we are born we store all of our learning into our subconscious mind, this will be all that we learn, so will include behaviours, reactions, thoughts, feelings etc. Sometimes these learnt behaviours can cause issues later in our lives and it is then that they need exploring and addressing. If we understand why we behave or think and feel the way we do, then we can start to make the changes we need to lead a happier, more fulfilling life.

Psychotherapeutic Counselling is known as a talking therapy as it involves the therapist and client having full and frank discussions to discover any patterns of behaviour or previous experiences (mostly childhood), that may be en-abling your current issues and stopping you from leading a happy life. It also can help to uncover any possible root causes that may be making you feel unhappy, stressed, anxious or unsettled. There are times in all of our lives where we need help to work through things that are bothering us that we just don’t understand. During our sessions together we shall explore possible root causes or previous patterns of behaviour to enable you to understand what may be causing you unhappiness, distress or anxiety.

Being able to talk to a trained psychotherapist can be the turning point in addressing long (or short) term issues or helping you to feel you are back in control of your life. It is a good way of exploring the whats, why’s and how’s in a safe, quiet, non judgemental, confidential environment. My role will be to help you find peace, happiness and reach your full potential.

The first appointment will be the consultation and can take from 1½ to 2 hours. During this session we shall discuss the areas you would like help with. We shall also talk about your life history, about you as a person and you will be able to ask any questions you may have. At the end of the session we shall discuss a proposed way forward, it is then your decision if you wish to continue therapy. This may involve short or long term therapy depending on the issues that need to be explored. All therapy sessions after the initial consultation will be for an hour.
